FCC and FERC Chairmen to Receive Broadband Over Power Line (BPL) Demonstration from Communication Technologies, Inc. (COMTek)

Chantilly, Virginia (October 12, 2004) – Communication Technologies, Inc. (COMTek), a global leader in delivering trusted information technology and telecommunications services for mission-critical environments, today announced that its ground-breaking Broadband Over Power Line (BPL) services for the City of Manassas, Virginia, will be demonstrated to Michael Powell, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, and Pat Wood III, Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Tuesday, October 12, 2004.
The tour will showcase BPL for high-speed Internet access as well as utility and public works functions, such as remote meter reading, outage notification and network security.
“We are pleased to provide a first-hand demonstration of the nation’s leading BPL network to both the Chairman of the FCC, Michael Powell and the Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Pat Wood” said Joseph E. Fergus, President and CEO of COMTek. “They will also see how cities like Manassas can benefit from technology-driven public works solutions made possible by BPL, thereby allowing utilities a more effective means of managing their investments,” he added.
Manassas is one of the first U.S. cities to offer high-speed Internet services over electrical power lines. The city awarded COMTek its BPL franchise in July 2004, and is considered the most successful BPL deployment in the nation. Manassas is COMTek’s first BPL deployment with additional locations planned nationwide.
Fergus continued, “This revolutionary technology will help ensure access to high-speed Internet for every community. As a national leader in this arena, COMTek is helping to set the standard for BPL services.”
COMTek’s BPL technology allows users to plug a modem into any electric outlet and gain high-speed Internet access. BPL is a sensible, efficient approach to delivering broadband services to end users via the existing electric power distribution system. BPL supports greater competition in the telecommunications market by creating an additional facilities-based access path to subscribers.
