COMTek ANNOUNCES UTILITY APPLICATIONS DELIVERED VIA BROADBAND OVER POWER LINE (BPL)
Federal Regulators Cite BPL as “Major Advancement” for Electric Grid Reliability and Security

Chantilly, Virginia (October 21, 2004) – Communication Technologies, Inc. (COMTek), a global leader in delivering trusted information technology, telecommunications and broadband services, today announced the commercial implementation of Broadband Over Power Line (BPL) applications for utilities. The applications include transformer and customer-level outage notification, demand-side management (DSM), automated meter reading (AMR), security video surveillance, and traffic signal automation, all currently running on COMTek’s commercial BPL network in Manassas, Virginia.
“COMTek’s BPL network revolutionizes the operation of utilities by bringing intelligence and total visibility to the electric grid,” said Joseph E. Fergus, President and CEO of COMTek. “This is another excellent example of how COMTek proactively assesses the needs of customers and provides the best solutions technology has to offer,” he added.
Allen Todd, Director of Utilities for the City of Manassas, said, “COMTek is committed to improving the quality of utility services, and they’re delivering on that commitment. We’re very excited about the unique advantages BPL affords consumers and utility operators alike.”
The utility applications along with consumer broadband services operating over COMTek’s BPL network were showcased on October 12, 2004, to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Michael Powell and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Chairman Patrick Wood III.
At the FCC’s October 14, 2004, meeting to adopt rule changes and encourage the development of Access Broadband over Power Line (Access BPL), Powell called BPL a “major advance for electric grid reliability and security,” and he noted that using BPL, "a municipal electric power company can have surveillance cameras on their electrical systems watching real time all of their power facilities. That is a great advance for Homeland Security.”
In a joint statement on BPL issued October 14 by Powell and FERC Chairman Wood, Wood said, “This technology holds tremendous potential, not just in providing new avenues for communications services, but in helping electricity systems operate more efficiently and reliably.”
About COMTek’s BPL Network
COMTek owns and operates the first city-wide commercial BPL network in the United States. COMTek was awarded a ten-year franchise by the City of Manassas to use the City’s power lines to deliver affordable, reliable, high-speed network services to citizens and business. Utilizing Main.Net BPL technology, COMTek’s service allows users to plug a modem into any electric outlet and gain high-speed internet access. The network supports data, internet telephone (VoIP), WiFi hot spots and video monitoring, as well as utility applications. COMTek’s BPL network passes several thousand homes and businesses in the City of Manassas and will be available to every home and business in the City by first quarter 2005. Manassas is the first of many BPL networks that COMTek plans to deploy across the nation in the coming year.
